SEND Information Report – 2023-24

At Monkseaton Middle School, teaching takes place within an ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum which builds on each individual child’s prior learning and aims to prepare all children for future pathways, opportunities and progression. Due to both two-tier and three-tier systems running simultaneously in North Tyneside, we foster a proactive and inclusive approach to all aspects of school life, including transition and our curriculum.

We place real importance on ensuring that our curriculum is crafted to help guide our child into becoming responsible and respectful learners, while building on prior learning. We encourage our pupils to be independent and resourceful learners with a highly developed sense of personal reflection and motivation.

Monkseaton Middle School’s curriculum is accompanied by an inclusive ethos which encourages all children to ‘care and succeed’, which is fundamental to our school given the high levels of deprivation and above National Average SEND. We strive to build each child's confidence and celebrate all forms of success.

Our curriculum supports all children to become aspiration and determined to succeed, whilst simultaneously developing resilience and the ability to learn from, and act upon, mistakes. We prioritise the importance of reading and feel it is necessary to ensure success in all curriculum areas and is a vital tool in preparing all children for the world around us. Reading is deeply embedded into school life, through registration reading, whole class reading in across subject areas and through home reading.

To complement and further build upon the work undertaken in the classroom, we have a range of trips and visits which make use of our locality as well as visiting places of interest further afield, such as France and The Big Bang Competition, to extend the learning of all children.

Our children are also exposed to guest speakers both within school and at local universities, who enthuse and broaden their understanding of the curriculum being taught, most notably to educate children on CEIAG and SMSC. Developing cultural capital is integral in our curriculum planning and developments. We actively strive to offer children a wide range of experiences and opportunities, both within the classroom and through enrichment and extra-curricular activities, so that they may:

Participate in a range of activities in and out of school, and contributes to the wider community

Feel motivated, confident, safe and happy

Feel challenged and supported to fulfil their academic potential

Acquire an understanding of, and respect for, their own cultures and beliefs and that of others.

At Monkseaton Middle School we operate a house system.

We have three form classes in each year group and each is allocated to a house. Our houses are called; Celts; Romans; Vikings. Membership of a house is indicated by the colour of the tie worn by pupils. Celts – yellow, Romans – blue, Vikings – red.

Each year elections for House Captains take place in September. Prospective candidates are nominated. They write their election manifesto and deliver an election speech to the pupils in their House.

Following a period of reflection an election takes place where each member of the House casts their vote for the House Captain of their choice. In the run up to the elections we hold assemblies to explain the electoral system and relate it to the election of leaders of political parties, members of parliament (MPs), local councillors in North Tyneside and the Young Mayoral elections which take place later in the academic year.

House Captains are elected from Year 8. The other year groups nominate class representatives to sit on the school council alongside their House Captains.
